A. Joe Asher, 81, Avon Park, Fla., formerly of Campbellsville, son of the late Silas W. Asher and Margaret Tuttle Asher, was born in London, Ky., April 1, 1906. He died at 8:50 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 12, 1987, at the Walker Memorial Hospital in Avon Park, Fla. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Avon Park. He graduated from the Northern Kentucky Law School in 1930 and practiced law from August 1930 until July 1967, having law offices in Harlan, Frankfort, Jenkins and Benton. He taught at Campbellsville College from 1967 through 1971 and part-time from 1971 through 1982, when he moved to Avon Park. When he left the college, he was general counsel and director for development. He was a past governor of the Kentucky-Tennessee District of Kiwanis International in 1966 and had over 49 years perfect attendance at weekly Kiwanis meetings. He united in marriage to Varina Dobyns on May 7, 1932. Besides his wife, he is survived by one daughter and two sons, Ada Asher Pope, Crescent City, Fla., William Joseph Asher, Mansfield, Ohio, and James Silas Asher, Virginia Beach, Va.; 12 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; 2 brothers and 3 sisters, Elton Asher, Clearwater, Fla., E.J. Asher, High Point, N.C., Stella Hukle, Hendersonville, N.C., Mary Olney, Sun City, Fla., and Edythe Gray, Dunedin, Fla.; several other relatives and many friends. The funeral was at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 15, at the First Baptist Church in Avon Park with Dr. Jack Farmer officiating. Burial was in Campbellsville Memorial Gardens. Parrott & Ramsey Funeral Home in charge of local arrangements.
