Jamestown Youth, 13, Drowns in Farm Pond

JAMESTOWN, July 12 — A
13-year-old Jamestown boy
drowned this afternoon while;
swimming in a small farm pond
about a mile north of here.
victim was:
John Lee Hurd. son of Mr.
and Mrs. Elliott Hurd of 177
Steele St.
The boy was swimming with
six other youngsters about 3:45
this afternoon when he dis-
appeared in the pond on the
farm of C. J. Rudolph Miller of
Moon Rd., off Rt. 60.

One of his companions summoned Miller, who was grading nearby . The farmer searched the bottom of the
shallow pond twice before recovering the body.

Volunteers from the Fluvanna
Fire Department were unable to
revive the boy.
John had gone to the pond
with his sister, Sandra Marie,
11, and Jean Lyon, 14, while
his family visited Mr. and Mrs.
LaVern Lyon on nearby Girts
Rd.
The other children included
Irene Stowell, 13; David Sto0
well, 12; Donna Nordine, 12,
and Janice Nordine, 13.

The youngsters said John
i swam once across the pond,
got out and then jumped in
again. He failed to come to
the surface when he re-entered the pond.

The pond is on the farm for
fire protection. Youngsters use
it frequently for swimming.
