Martin - Leon Woodrow Brownlee, 85 of Martin, died August 16, 2000 at Methodist Healthcare Volunteer Hospital in Martin.
Services were Saturday at Murphy Funeral Home in Martin, with Bro. Roger Oldham officiating. Burial was in Eastside Cemetery, Martin.
Gerald Brooks, Jim Graves, Larry Standbridge, Ronald Nielsen, Tom Frey and John Ashley served as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers were members of Fellowship Sunday Class, First Baptist Church.
Brownlee was born January 9, 1915, son of the late George Lewis and Elizabeth Caldonia Plemper Brownlee. He was a veteran of Air Force, Bombandier WW II, German Prisoner of War.
He received a bachelor of science degree from Sul Ross State Teachers College, Alpine, Texas; master of education from University of Texas, Austin; doctorate of philosophy from University of Texas, Austin. He was instrumental in the organization of Phi Delta Kappa at University of Memphis and on staff in the Education Department at Memphis State University for over 30 years.
He was a retired Professor of Philosophy, University of Memphis. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Martin and American Legion Post # 69.
Survivors include his wife, Juanita W. Brownlee of Martin; two brothers, Albert Brownlee of Dallas, Texas and Alvin Brownlee of Dumas, Texas; one sister, Lennis Brandenberg of Jacksburg, Texas and a sister-in-law, Faye Robertine Vowell of Martin.
