Hugh was born Jan. 27, 1915, in Petersburg. He joined the Navy as a Seabee on Oct. 18, 1942, and was discharged on Dec. 9, 1945. He served in the Aleutians Islands, Saipan, Marianas Islands and Nagasaki, Japan.
He spent most of his life in Midland and retired from Getty Oil in 1977. He moved to Bedford in June 2003. He was preceded in death by six brothers and sisters and his first wife, Billie Sloan.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Mary E. Sloan; son, Gene R. Sloan and wife, Renu of Euless; two grandchildren, Tania Nikol Sloan of Euless, and Jeven R. Sloan and wife, Michelle, of Arlington; two great-granddaughters who were the joy of his life, Sophie Marie Sloan and Ruby Nicole Sloan, both of Arlington; stepsons, Gary N. Russell and wife, Pat, of Durango, Colo.; James A. Russell of Nipton, Calif.; brother, Clarence W. Sloan of Midland; sister, Edna Sloan of Dallas; and numerous loving nieces and nephews and other family members and friends.
Memorial services have been scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 22, 2005, at Ellis Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow at Resthaven Memorial Park. Arrangements are under the direction of Ellis Funeral Home
