U.S. Army brigadier general Charles R. Viale as of spring 1994. Viale was promoted to the rank of brigadier general on November 16, 1993. General Viale received his first regular U.S. Army commission through a Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC) program at San Jose College. He served as a platoon leader in the 82nd Airborne and the 25th Infantry Division during the Vietnam War. General Viale commanded the 42nd Company, 4th Airborne Training Battalion in Vietnam in the early 1970s. He also earned advanced degrees from the University of Kansas and the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College.
