William Hickle Graves' 2nd wife was Emma Bell Renfro Neal. He died at age 54 from a heart attack while working his fields. She was left with Nannie, Vivian, Ruth, Carrie, Bill, Lillian and Dovie. Carrie was only a baby in arms at the time. Her stepson, Charley Graves, put his life on hold and farmed to support her and the girls until they were older. She adored my mother, Bonnie Marie Housmon Dixon from the moment she was born and kept her until it was time for her to go to school. Those in the family who remember her say she was gentle and soft spoken with never a harsh word for anyone. I know my mother adored her. I was born 4 days before she died and my mother said that when someone is born someone goes to Heaven to make room for them on Earth and that Grandmother Emma went for me.I hope I have "made her proud".
Emma's obituary, on December 19, 1939 in the Dallas Daily Times Herald, sec. II, p. 20, col. 3) listed her age as 73 at the time of her death. Her children were all grown up now and listed as Miss Ruth Graves, Corsicana, Mrs. Claud (Claude) Housman (Housmon), Seminole, Ok; Mrs. Clay Herring, Quanah; Mrs. W. L. Dent, Mrs. Carrie Blackwell, Granbury; Mrs. James Pearce, Wylie; Mrs. Floyd Sprinkle, Vinita, Okla; two sons, J. W. Graves, Sulphur Springs, Charlie Graves of McKinney. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Wednesday in the First Baptist Church of Farmersville, Texas. She was interred in the Princeton Cemetery next to her husband. Farmersville Funeral Home handled the arrangements. (Thank You to Find A Grave contributor Cindy Womble Billman for sending this to me.)
