From the 10/13/1969 Sparta Herald:

"Clarence Edward Doten was born November 16, 1880, the youngest of seven children born to Amaziah Doten and his wife Ellen Mary Shaver. His parents were homesteading in an area which is now Wilton, Wis. His father died when Clarence was 11 years old. His brothers and sisters have all preceded him in death - brothers Jim, Myron, Charles, and sisters, Ella Webb, Maggie Beardsley, and Sylvia Gregory.

In March 1901 Mr. Doten married Mabel Clare Hoff. To this union was born a daughter Jennie Ellen, now Mrs. David M. White of Holland, Michigan.

On August 23, 1937 Mrs. Doten died at the age of 54.

In May of 1940 Mr. Doten married Margaret Andrews Strouts, who passed away in December of 1952.

For 37 years Mr. Doten worked for the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad, retiring in December of 1945, at which time he was a signal retainer.

Mr. Doten loved trout fishing and until a couple of years ago would be one of the first ones out on opening day. He was a warm and friendly man with a great sense of humor and loved to go down town and talk with friends every day.

On Friday Sept. 12, he was admitted to St. Mary's hospital where he passed away Sunday morning, Sept. 21. Surviving are his daughter, two grandchildren, and one great-granddaughter. His granddaughter is Mrs. Ronald D. Ten Brink, of Holland, Mich., whose daughter Nova Kristin also survives, and the grandson is Missile Technician Chief Keith Doten White serving in the Submarine Service of the U. S. Navy.

Other survivors include many nieces and nephews, one sister-in-law, and two brothers-in-law."
