Upon arriving in Vietnam 13 February 1968, Stephen was assigned to Charlie Company, 1st Battalion, 27th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division.
During Operation Allen Brook Charlie Company was operating in the vicinity of Cun Ba (3), Go Noi Island when the Marines encountered hostile forces. Stephen died as a result of gunshot wounds to the head and body from hostile rifle fire.
Cpl Austin served his country for 3 years and died 7 days after his 21st birthday.
Survived by his parents, Albert H and Lorene Austin of 4057 Main St, Denair, CA.

Navy Cross posthumously awarded 52 years later.
