Son of Abijah Wheeler and Mary F. (Meriam) Benjamin.

On 12 Jul 1861 George, a farmer, mustered into service with Company B, the 15th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, being credited to the quota of Westminster, Worcester County, Massachusetts. He was 20 years, 9 months and 17 days old.

He died on 21 Oct 1861 at The Battle of Ball's Bluff, Leesburg, Virginia, "He was never seen afterwards and was presumed killed in action or drowned during retreat."

He was 21 years and 26 days old.

In 1890 his mother received a pension based on George's service.
