Alice L. Bailey, 92, of Sullivan formerly of Decatur passed away on Saturday, January 5, 2013 in Titus Manor.
Alice led an interesting and full life which began at her birth on April 27, 1920, in the two-story home of her parents, George M. and Florence V. (neé Barger) Pfeifer, on a quiet street in the northwest part of Decatur, IL.
Alice married Noal D. "Bud" Bailey on March 21, 1938 in Davenport, Iowa. While her husband served in World War II, Alice worked at the war plant in Illiopolis. Alice worked as a domestic in doctors' offices and private homes. Her employers soon became her friends and considered her part of their families. She continued those friendships long after she gave up the domestic work to become the bookkeeper for her husband's business, Bailey's Bulk Milk Hauling.
Alice took great pride in her role as wife, mother, and homemaker. She was always there for her family and did what she could to make sure each of her children was well-rounded and self-sufficient. Alice was a Brownie/Girl Scout leader for both daughters and continued to work with the Girl Scouts for several years afterwards. She always encouraged her children in various music and dance lessons. Alice was a creative, multi-talented woman who enjoyed variety in her life. She was just as "at home" fixing the Sunday dinner as she was checking the oil in the car. She enjoyed ball room dancing; singing and playing in a kitchen band with her sister, Ellen; crafts including ceramics, plastic-art (which she taught others), lap quilts, knitting; travel, Scrabble and crossword puzzles. She was an avid Cubs fan. Alice was an over comer. She always displayed great perseverance. Alice loved life. She often sang around the house, especially while cleaning, cooking, or doing the dishes.
Alice had broad shoulders and always made time to listen to her children's problems or to friends who dropped by for a visit. If you asked for her advice, she would give it, but she seldom volunteered it. Along with her children, Alice became a member of Woodland Chapel Presbyterian Church, and served as deaconess. Later she transferred to Mt. Zion Presbyterian Church, where she was a member for over 40 years. She was a regular giver and a strong supporter of the youth and their programs. After living in Decatur most of her life, she decided to move to a retirement home in Sullivan, -Titus Manor- where she made new friends and continued playing scrabble, putting together jigsaw puzzles and making crafts. Here she enjoyed living the remainder of her life; here she died-in her home.

Surviving are three sisters: Ellen Marsh of Decatur, IL; Martha Smith of Decatur, IL; Barbara Corley of Stafford, VA; and one brother, Jack Pfeifer of Decatur, IL. Also surviving are her children: Janice L. Bailey of Yuma, AZ; David A. Bailey (Dinny) of Kokomo, IN; and Sharon D. (Dave) Weger of Sullivan, IL; 7 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, three brothers, four sisters, a grandson, and a niece.

Funeral Service Celebrating Alice's life will be 10 AM Friday, January 11, 2013 in Graceland/Fairlawn Funeral Home with Pastor Joel Stevenor officiating. Visitation will be 6-8 PM Thursday in the funeral home. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery and conclude with the "Flight Home” Ceremony. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Mt. Zion Presbyterian or Titus Manor, Sullivan. Special thanks to Titus Manor staff; Dr. John Newlin and staff and Harbor Light Hospice.
