Marja Ellen (Servoss) Brownson, 90, of Mt. Pleasant, died on Thursday, April 26, 2012 at Woodland Hospice.Funeral services for Marja will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at Clark Family Funeral Chapel in Mt. Pleasant with Pastor Brian LaMew officiating. Interment will follow in Memorial Gardens Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Clark Family Funeral Chapel Sunday, April 29 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m and on Monday, April 30 from 10 a.m. until the time of the service. Those wishing to make a memorial donation in memory of Marja may consider Woodland Hospice or Mt. Pleasant Community Church. Envelopes will be available at the funeral chapel.
Marja was born Aug. 2, 1921, the daughter of Jay and Lena (Grove) Servoss. She married Howard Brownson on June 15, 1947, in Mt. Pleasant at her parents home. Howard and Marja were married for 53 years. Marja graduated from Mt. Pleasant High School in 1940. Before becoming a homemaker, she worked at many local businesses, including The New Yorker, S & S Grocery, Skatecrest Roller Rink, Orens Department Store and The Pickwick. Marja loved knitting, crocheting, ice skating, camping and traveling. She and Howard lived in Crystal, Michigan after retirement, spending their summers boating and swimming in Crystal Lake before heading to Florida for the winter months. The couple moved back to Mt. Pleasant in 1999 to be near family during their later years. Marja was a member of Mt. Pleasant Community Church.
Marja is survived by her children, Gene (Marjie) Brownson of Lake Isabella and Marlene (Dan) McGuirk of Tulsa, Oklahoma; her grandchildren, Jerrod (Wendi) Brownson of Alma and Melissa (Jason) Benway of Grand Haven; her niece, Linda Doerr of Mt. Pleasant; and four great-grandchildren, Grace and Bradley Benway, and Thaddeus and Naomi Brownson. She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard; her brother and sister-in-law, Gerald and Marjorie Servoss; her daughter-in-law, Cindy Brownson; and great grand-daughter, Faith Ann Brownson.
