Son of Ono Elliot and Nancy (Learned) Humphrey.

On 7 Aug 1862 John, a shoemaker, mustered into service with the 15th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry. He was 18 years, 10 months and 1 day old.

Joined Co. E of the 15th with his 1st cousins, Joel and Cyrus Larned.

John, together with his first cousins, Cyrus Larned and Joel W. Larned, served together in Co. E of the 15th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry.

On 17 Sep 1862 John was wounded at The Battle of Antietam, and lost an arm.

On 16 Jan 1863 John mustered out o the 15th Massachusetts due to disability.

John married Ada Idella Rouse, daughter of Thomas Ryant and Phebe Amelia Copeland. They had at least four children before she died in 1923.

He died on 22 May 1928 at Oxford, Worcester County, Massachusetts. He was 84 years, 7 months and 16 days old.
