John Weems, 76, of Greeneville, died Thursday at James H. Quillen Veterans Affairs Medical Center at Mountain Home after an extended battle with multiple myeloma.

Mr. Weems was a 1946 graduate of Baileyton High School and joined the Air Force in 1952.

He was a U.S. Air Force veteran, serving at various military bases throughout the United States.

In 1964, he was stationed at Andrews Air Force Base, and remained there until his retirement in 1978 as chief master sergeant, the Air Force's highest enlisted grade.

While at Andrews, he was an aircraft maintenance supervisor with the 89th Air Lift Wing. This unit was responsible for the safe, reliable transportation for the President, vice president, and other high ranking officials in this and other countries.

Mr. Weems left Andrews for one year, when he served in Bien Hoa Vietnam, where he was awarded the Bronze Star.

After returning to Greene County, he engaged in small farming while obtaining degrees in business and criminology at Walter State Community College.

Upon graduation, he accepted a position with Greene County Sessions Court as a Probation Officer, retiring after 10 years of service.

Mr. Weems' family noted, "He was a member of Tusculum Baptist Church, where he served faithfully in many capacities as long as his health permitted. His special joy was his College and Career Sunday School Class."

He was a son of the late Daryl and Mae Bowser Weems and was preceded in death by his stepmother: Pearl Charles Weems.
