Essie Mae Johnson Grant Wright was born Aug. 25, 1918, in Sumter, a daughter of the late Mansfield and Rosa Loyd Johnson. She entered into eternal rest on May 21, 2010, at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center, Fayetteville, N.C.

Essie was educated in the public schools of Sumter County. She accepted Christ as her personal Savior at an early age and became a member of Wayman Chapel AME Church.

Essie was married to the late Richardson "Sugar" Grant and to this union four children were born: Vivian "Bird" Grant, Melvin "Ricky" Grant, Barbara "Pie" Grant and Leroy "Pook" Grant. She later married the late James "Bo" Wright.

Essie was a very faithful member of Hopewell Baptist Church for more than 52 years, where she served in the following ministries: the missionary board, trustee wives, usher board, pastor's aide and senior choir. She was also a member of the Saint Paul Chapter No. 345 Order of OES, until her health failed.

Essie was a very friendly person who never met a stranger. She always greeted you with a smile and lived a full and happy life. While traveling around the world with her daughter, Lt. Col. Muriel "Nina" Loney, she took trips to places she never thought she would see.

In addition to her husbands, she was preceded in death by her siblings, Virginia Johnson, John Johnson, Henry Johnson and Willie Johnson; and her children, Vivian, Melvin, Barbara and Leroy.

She is survived by several of her grandchildren she reared, Donna Jackson, Jacquline Hicks, Patrick Loney, Muriel Loney, Douglas Grant and Aundra Grant. She also reared Samuel Elijah Grant, Shirley Grant, Shirley Pinkney and Polly Skinner. Also surviving are a very special great-granddaughter, Malaysia "Bootsi" Ludd-Loney; a brother, James Johnson; a host of great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, stepchildren, a daughter-in-law, a sister-in-law, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Hopewell Baptist Church with the pastor, the Rev. Richard Addison, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Edward L. Sanders, the Rev. Dr. D.L. Grant and the Rev. Dr. Lewis Walker Jr.

Interment will follow in the churchyard cemetery.
