Thomas Kelly was a young brother of Clinton Kelly, and part of the great Kelly wagon train that came from Kentucky to Oregon in 1848. Clinton and Thomas as well as two other brothers and many sons took up donation land claims in Portland, Oregon. Thomas married Christina Sunderlund, daughter of another Oregon pioneer, Benjamin Sunderland and his wife Maria Elizabeth Schaeffer Sunderland. The Sunderland donation land claim was in the area where Portland International Airport stands today. Thomas' original donation land claim was in the area of Grant Park/Grant High School in NE Portland. Thomas moved to Eastern Washington in the Yakima Valley in 1871.
