On November 26, 2012, Peter Caverno Myers Sr., 81 of Sikeston Missouri died at his home with his family present.
He was born January 4, 1931 in Racine Wisconsin to the late Samuel Peter Myers and Margaret Morrill (Caverno) Myers. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. On September 13, 1952 he married Mary (Williamson) Myers who survives of the home. He is also survived by two daughters & son-in-laws, Kristina( Myers) & Timothy Coppage Sr. of Matthews MO, Gretchen (Myers) & Jonathan Maloyed of Matthews, three sons and one daughter in law, Jon E. & Sherry Myers of Catron MO, Peter C. Myers Jr. of Gun Barrell, TX and Joseph W. Myers of El Paso, TX., 11 very special grandchildren and five great- grandchildren whom he loved deeply; He is survived by two sisters, Margaret Megowen of Providence RI and Katherine Montgomery of New York, NY; one brother, Bill Myers of Racine, WI. He was preceded in death by a sister Judy Lay Myers of Spokane, WA
He leaves behind special memories with many dear friends. Among those of whom their friendship he cherished were Lanie Black of Charleston, Don King of Sikeston and Loyd Smith of Sikeston.
His love of agriculture, conservation and Southeast Missouri started as a young boy when he spent summers at his Grandfather's farm near Canalou, MO. After graduating from High School in Racine Wisconsin in 1949 and the University of Wisconsin in 1953, he served in the US army as a First Lieutenant. He then began his career in agriculture in Southeast Missouri.
In 1966 he was named Outstanding Young Farmer by the Sikeston Jaycees, which lead to him being honored as the National Outstanding Young Farmer of the Year. He was a 4-H Leader, Little League basketball & baseball coach, Sikeston Jaycees, member of the Sikeston Kiwanis Club and Scott County Republicans.
His dedicated service includes, Missouri Farm Bureau, Missouri Pork Producers, Missouri Delta Center, and Commissioner with the Missouri Department of Conservation. In 1981 he was appointed Assistant Secretary of Natural Resources and later as Chief of the Soil Conservation Service in Washington D.C.
From 1982-1989 he was appointed Deputy Secretary of Agriculture during the Reagan Administration. In 1991 he felt privileged and honored to serve the people of the 160th district as their State Representative in Jefferson City.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, November 29,, 2012 at Trinity Gospel Church 901 Davis Blvd. in Sikeston. Funeral service will be conducted Friday November 30 at 10:00 a.m. at Trinity Gospel Church with Pastor Len Meyers officiating. Burial will follow with full military honors at the Missouri Veteran's Cemetery in Bloomfield Missouri.
Pallbearers will be Tim Coppage Sr., Tim Coppage Jr., Sam Coppage, Danny Coppage, Mark Coppage, Jon Myers, Jon Eric Myers, Jay Myers, Jonathan Maloyed, John Ross Maloyed, Jerod Scott, and Taylor Scott.
