James Walter Ussery, the son of John B. and Mollie Ussery, was born in Wink, Winkler County, Texas and had a variety of jobs in a relatively short life. He came from a family where he had seven siblings: Oscar, Flora, Amos, Hannie, Willie, Mary A. and John D. Ussery.
James was elected to the Texas Legislature at twenty years of age but did not actually serve until he had passed his twenty-first birthday. At one time, he, supposedly, was the youngest person to have ever been elected to the Texas Legislative body. As well as being a politician, he was also a farmer and a minister.
He married Ludie Leatrice Wright in 1912 and they were the parents of six children; Paul, Emma Christine, Morris, Stephen William, Mildred and Birdie Mae Ussery.
James Walter died a month before his forty-fifth birthday on June 24, 1937 and was buried in the Kermit Cemetery in Winkler County where he shares a common headstone with his daughter, Mildred.
