Alfred W. Haar (Al) was born at Freeman, South Dakota on February 24, 1923 to Theodore F. and Adella Schamber Haar. He attended St. Paul Lutheran grade school and graduated from Freeman High School in 1941. Following this he attended Yankton College. During the second year of college he was drafted into the army, whre he served with the 511th Paratroop Infantry in the South Pacific. At the end of WWII he was discharged and returned to Freeman and began work with his father at Fred Haar Co.

On November 28, 1948, he married JoAnn Schaefer, daughter of R.G. and Norma Schaefer of Denver, Clorado. They have five children: sons Jim and Bob are in partnership with their father in Fred Haar Co., Patti of Janesville, Wisconsin, Julie who is an employee of Citebank in Sioux Falls, and Kristi, a senior at Freeman High School.

In 1952, after the death of his father, Ted, Alfred assumed ownership of Fred Haar Co. In 1978 Jim and Robert were taken in as part owners and are the fourth generation under the same family ownership. The year 1982 will mark the 100th Anniversary of the Implement's service to the Freeman community.
