#42-7583, nicknamed "Wee Willie."
While on bombing mission over a German-held
airfield at Orleans, France, the bombs were
dropped through closed bomb bay doors, and a
section of the damaged door struck the tail,
causing the aircraft to go into an
unrecoverable spin. All ten airmen aboard
were killed. He was on his 48th combat mission.
Son of Joseph and Rozalia Popiolek, of
Camden, New Jersey.
