Margaret Cavier married Charles W. Stiegert February 27, 1924 in Wagner, Charles Mix County, South Dakota. On the 1935 S.D. State Census, Margaret reported that 'Smith' was her maiden name.

Margaret was adopted by Henry Julius Cavier at the time of her mother's marriage to him in 1902. Born in 1901 in Butler Township near Letcher, Sanborn County, South Dakota, she was the daughter of Grace Pearl Wares (1881-1942), who had assumed the Smith alias to hide their identities.

In 1980, Margaret's birth (and true heritage) was discovered by the Mitchell family, who were searching for their own mother's roots. Margaret was found to be the full blood sister of their mother, Etta May Chase (1899-1944), who was born Thelma Marie Wares, Grace's first daughter.

Both Thelma's and Margaret's biological father was Jasper Nooten Conley (1876-1949), Grace's neighbor, William Haden's visiting nephew. The couple were unmarried.

Having been forced by her family to give up her first infant daughter in 1900, Grace fled with Margaret to Tyndall where she assumed the alias 'Mrs. Smith'. Shortly thereafter, she married Henry J. Cavier, a resident of the town, who raised Margaret as his own.

In 1988 the descendant families of Etta, and the two surviving brothers of Margaret, united at her graveside in Wagner.
