James was born at Treasure Hill to Michael and Hannah Riordan. His obituary indicates he was "one of the first white children born in that area." His parents resided in Emigrant Springs, where they operated a dairy.
He married Jennie O'Hare in 1897. The couple lived in Lane City, where they had mining interests. Later they moved to Spring Valley, where the family engaged in cattle ranching. In 1902, they moved to Lassen County, California and managed a hotel and post office for four years. The family returned to Nevada after Michael's death.
The obituary contains a lot of information about James and his family. He was survived by his wife, Jennie and his children: Francis of Phoenix, Arizona; Emmett of Sacramento, California; Lawrence of San Francisco; Mrs. Ethel Fraser of Ely, Nevada; Mrs. Loretta Rodrique of Reno, Nevada; and Mrs. Gertrude Gottschalk of Carson City, Nevada.
