Ex-Pastor of Parish Dies at 76
Death came in a local hospital at 3:15 am Sunday to the Rev. John Francis Andrew Waters, pastor of St. Marys Catholic parish from 1903 to 1933. He was 76. Father Waters celebrated the 50th anniversary of his ordination as a priest in December 1950. He had been ill for several years. Father Waters was born in January 1881 in St. Louis, MO. He came to Portland as a boy with his parents,
John and Margaret Waters. After receiving his early education here, he entered St. Marys seminary in Baltimore MD, and after his ordination, came directly to Astoria, serving as priest here for 30 years. In 1933, Father Waters went to Albany. He returned to Astoria about five years ago and has since then been in St. Marys hospital.
Surviving him are two brothers, William B. Waters, Portland, and Dr. Joseph T. Waters, Los Angeles. Father Waters was a widely known and active member of the community for many years during his service for the local parish. When he began his services here, Astoria was a wide-open town of brothels and saloons and was notorious all along the Pacific coast. Father Waters led the repression of the brothels and reduction in the number of saloons. Extensive celebration was held here in 1950 for the 50th anniversary of his ordination. Bishop Francis Leipsiz of the Baker diocese conducted the mass.
Father Waters was one of the youngest priests to be ordained when he entered into the priesthood in 1900.
The recitation of the rosary will be held each evening until Thursday at 7:45 pm at St. Marys Star of the Sea church. Further details of his life history and of services will be announced by the Hughes-Ransom Mortuary. The body will lie in state from now until the funeral at St. Marys Hospital, where it may be viewed.
