Abijah Wright was born September 13, 1762 at Pittsfield, Berkshire County, Massachusetts to William Wright. His mother was the first wife of William, but her name is unknown. In 1778, Abijah moved to Middletown, Connecticut, where he entered the service of his country in July or August. Under the command of Captain Shepard, his company went to New Haven, arriving too late to save the stores which the British had burned. The company stayed until they were relieved by a company from Berkshire, Massachusetts. Discharged, Abijah went home to Middletown. On June 1, 1779, he enlisted again for a three month period in Captain Stewart's Company and they marched to New London and then on to Norwich. In June of 1780 or '81, he shipped out on board a schooner commanded by Captain Fanning. They went to New London, on to Stonington and then out to sea. At Montauk Point, they captured a row galley with thirty men aboard. They also captured a British sloop near the mouth of the St. Lawrence. After leaving the service, Abijah married. It is unknown if he married Roxanna Parker or an unknown woman as his first wife. What is known is that he and Roxanna had four children: Samuel, Abijah, Roxanna and Richard. Abijah and his wife moved back to Pittsfield, Massachusetts about 1784, staying for eight years. Then the family moved to Otsego County, New York about 1792. In 1804, they moved to Richmond, Ontario County, New York. On May 20, 1810, Abijah married Sally Parks as his third wife in Cohocton, Steuben County, New York. They were married by the Rev. William Kellogg and their children were Ezekiel M. and Isaac P. Abijah died in Richmond, Ontario County, New York October 2, 1843 and is presumed buried in the Richmond area.
