Oscar Adkins was the first husband of Mary Elizabeth Ball (Lizzie) and they had 6 children, Vonnie, Clifford, James (went by Burl), Oscar (went by the name of Gilbert), William (goes by the nickname Billy), and Ernest Ray (stillborn).

Oscar fought in the famous Blair Mountain Battle for the union of coal miners. At the age of 48, Oscar suffered a stroke that rendered him immobile and left him bedfast for the last 2 years of his life. He died in January, 1942 and the day he was buried at Ball Cemetery was said by Vonnie Mae to have been the coldest day of the year.
