L D Humes was born while his father studied at Allegheny College. They moved when he was about 9 years old to Union City, PA, where his father served as superintendent of schools. As a young man, his nickname was "Professor", but he later acquired the nickname "Tuba" since he played that instrument, starting in the Union City band. He graduated in 1910 from Union City HS. He studied Animal Husbandry at Pennsylvania State University and graduated in 1914. He was a member of Phi Kappa Psi and played tuba in the Penn State band.
He taught animal husbandry for one year at Colorado State, Ft Collins, CO, 1915, then returned to Pennsylvania and married Helen Louise Treat in 1916.
He served in WWI (Sept - November, 1918) and was on his way to officer training when the Armistice was signed.
He and his family moved from Pennsylvania to St. Petersburg, Florida, in 1924. He managed a bank insurance department and managed his own insurance agency.
He was active in community life, participating in the American Legion and managing the Legion's Orange Band. He was also a member of the Shriners, the BPOE and the Masons. He was a lifelong Presbyterian.
He was named to the Civil Service Board for St Pete in 1938; and served as the director of Civil Service until he retired in 1963.
