Mary was the daughter of John Henry Maddux and Mary Ann McKern. She was born in Linn County, but she and her family moved to Yamhill County by the time she was two. At age 18 she married Everett Bales. They had two children: Esther (Mrs. Vere Byron Higbee) and Arthur. Everett died in August 1907.

In September 1907 Mary married Edgar Black. They lived on a fruit and poultry farm near Shedd and had a daughter--Mary Evelyn (Mrs. John Teetz). In 1930 they moved to Langlois in Curry County, where Edgar was the postmaster for 17 years. Then they moved to Lebanon. In 1957 they moved to Corvallis, and she died there in 1962.
