Melvin Hurley "Mel" Wessel was born on May 5, 1921 in Hannibal, Missouri, the son of Charles Wessel and Grace Irene (Cleek) Wessel (1887–1985). {In the 1925 Missouri state census and the 1930 federal census for Iowa, Grace Irene (Cleek) Wessel was already divorced, and the only child she had with her was Mel.}

As a young man he loved to hunt. He joined the US Army, serving for 22½ years and retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel. During his service he received numerous awards and decorations, including the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, Commendation Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, Meritorious Unit Commendation, Good Conduct Medal and 13 Service Medals. A quite man, Melvin was very proud of his country.

Mel met his future wife Mary Ellen Voorhees (1926–2012) at a roller rink. They fell in love and were married about 1949. They enjoyed music and loved to go to the theatre and travel together.

He also had a great interest in assembling radio controlled boats. His highly detailed model of the USS Missouri Battleship is on permanent display in the Eagle Nest Club House at the Navy Golf Course adjacent to the Los Alamitos Naval/Air Base.

Mel passed away on January 16, 2012 in California.

Preceded in Death by a brother, he was survived by his wife, and several cousins, as well as many friends.

A Memorial Service to Celebrate His Life was held at the Arboretum at the Crystal Cathedral on Lewis Street in Garden Grove, California.
