OBITUARY-AUGUSTUS E BRESSLER 1866-1962

AUGUSTUS BRESSLER DIES AT AGE 95,
ATHENS RESIDENT FOR 78 YEARS
Augustus (Gus) BRESSLER, 95, of 121 Edward St., Athens, a resident of the borough for 78 years and the oldest living Ingersoil-Rand pensioner, died at 5 o'clock this morning at the Robert Packer Hospital following a short illness.
He was admitted to the Robert Packer Hospital late in November with a throat condition and was there on his birthday, Dec. 2, He was discharged after treatment but was readmitted to the hospital on Dec. 24.
Born in Salona, near Lock Haven on Dec. 1866, he worked on several farms, finally going to work in a blacksmith shop for (?) cents a day. In 1884, when he was 18 years old, he came to Athens being called here by his former blacksmith teacher.
For eight months he worked at the Kellogg-Maurice bridge works, for 14 cents an hour, and during this period was a member of the first fire company organized at the Athens plant.
He left the bridge works and went to work in the blacksmith shop owned by W.W. (Preacher) ANDREWS, where he finished learning his trade. In 1886, at the age of 20, he purchased his own shop, later going into partnership with his former instructor, ANDREWS who he recalled as "the bet blacksmith I ever saw."
In 1908 Mr. BRESSLER was elected tax collector of Athens borough and in 1915 went to work as a gear cutter for the Ingersoll-Rand, retiring in 1940 after 25 years of service. At one time he also ran a newsstand on the site of the present Meade Newstand on S. Main St. He has been a pensioner from the I-R for the past 22 Years.
Active in his later years, he took over the job of sharpening the tools used on the Susquehanna River Bridge reconversion job in 1953 when he learned that the construction company was sending them to Philadelphia to be reconditioned. His was the first car to pass over the bridge following the completion of the work. He also sharpened knives and other implements on an old-fashioned pedal driven stone sharpener.
A familiar sight at athletic contests in which Athens High School took part, he was always on hand at football, baseball, track and basketball games and for years faithfully attended Athens Little League Games, both at home and on the road. He was one of Athens' staunchest supporters, win, lose or draw.
He proudly boated of the fact that he only owned two automobiles in his, a Model T Ford, and in 1931 a Model A, in which he was familiar sight in the Valley towns until late last year when he had to give up driving at age 94.
Mr. BRESSLER was an active member of the Athens Methodist Church and attended services regularly until his health kept him away late last year.
Surviving are a brother, William of Pittsburgh; a sister, Mrs. Sadie BOWERS (Sarah Bressler) of Johnstown; a cousin Mrs. Jesse CHILDS of Athens; and several nieces and nephews.
The body was removed to the Jenkins Funeral Home, lll S. Main St., Athens, where friends may call anytime after 7:30 this evening and where services will be held Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Rev. W. Harold SLOAN, pastor of the Athens Methodist Church will officiate and burial will be in Tioga Point Cemetery.
