Opera Singer. A native of Vienna, Austria, she had a career of nearly 50 years and some 2,100 performances which were distinguished by memorable portrayals of Richard Strauss and Richard Wagner heroines. At one performance in Vienna the applause lasted through an entire intermission. Also at the Metropolitan Opera in New York; debuted as Lady Macbeth on February 5, 1959, and culminated with her final performance as the Countess in The Queen of Spades on January 2, 1996. During her career she rendered a total of 229 performances in 24 roles. Featured in the Met premieres of Macbeth, Nabucco, Ariadne auf Naxos, Die Frau ohne Schatten, and Kátya Kabanová.
