Artist. Considered by many to be Germany's foremost realist painter and graphic artist. Born in Breslau, Germmany, he illustrated both the great events of contemporary history, such as the 1848 Revolution in Berlin and the Franco-Prussian War, as well as the mundane events of daily life. He is closely associated with the Berlin, having lived and painted there 75 years, both before and after it became an imperial city, and it is where he died.
