Minnie Hawkins MORGANTON Minnie Mae Walker Hawkins, 98, of Morganton, died Thursday, Dec. 27, 2012. Born in Burke County, Aug. 13, 1914, she was the daughter of the late Joseph McDowell Walker and Hester York Walker. She was a longtime member of Calvary Baptist Church, where she served as a Sunday school teacher. Minnie retired from the J. Iverson Riddle Developmental Center, where she worked as a Health Care Technician. She loved working out of doors, especially gardening. Minnie was a charter member and secretary of the Burke County Farmer's Market. Along with her husband, she owned and operated an apple orchard for approximately 30 years. She loved talking to people. Minnie is survived by her sons, James D. Hawkins and wife, Sandra, and Stephen A. Hawkins, all of Morganton; grandsons, Nathan E. Hawkins and wife, Sonya, of Morganton and Aaron J. Hawkins and wife, Heidi, of Raleigh; and great-grandchildren, Abigail L. Hawkins, Connor D. Hawkins, and Serenity A. Hawkins. In addition to her parents, Minnie was preceded in death by her husband, Herman George Hawkins; two brothers, Delbert Walker and Phifer Walker; and a daughter-in-law, Patricia H. Hawkins. The funeral will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, Dec. 31, at Calvary Baptist Church, with the Rev. Larry Thompson officiating. Burial will follow in Burke Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the church for one hour prior to the service. Memorial contributions may be made to Calvary Baptist Church, 407 S. Green St., Morganton, NC 28655.
