Death Notice ~ Miss Salome Stevens

Died in this city, May 5th, Miss Salome Stevens, aged 31 years.

The subject of the following lines was for ten years a consistent member of the Reformed Dutch church in Bleecker Street, during which time she has ever witnessed a good confession before others. It seemed to be the delight of her soul to be in the house of God, no matter where the gospel was to be preached by Christ's ambassador, or whether it was a meeting for prayer and exhortation, her seat was seldom vacant. The Sabbath-school has also lost in her a faithful teacher, which station she filled till compelled, by declining health, and having served him while in the bloom of youth, when disease preyed upon her vigorous constitution, the Savior was precious unto her soul, and she was enabled to lean upon the arm of her Beloved, as she approached the river of Jordan. It mattered not to her whether she lived or died. She had no other will but the will of God, and although the messenger came to her unexpectedly. to call her home, her lamp was trimmed, and her light burning. She breathed her last, and sweetly fell asleep in Jesus, without a struggle or a groan. Her friends and relatives mourn not as those without hope. While they shed the tears of sorrow, they doubt not but she is happy with Christ in glory.

"Why should we mourn departing friends,
Or shake at Death's alarms?
'Tis but the voice that Jesus sends,
To call us to his arms."
