According to newpaper celebrating his 84th birthday in 1915, he was born in 1831. Jerome resided in Illinois until 1863 when he returned to Michigan where he learned the harness business. In 1869 he headed west settling in Shehandoah, Page, Iowa and became interested in the propagation of corn. He successfully founded the J.B. Armstrong and Son Seed Corn Company which became world famous.
