Paul J. Cooley, 92, former Muncie Mayor, died late Monday afternoon, May 7, 2007 at Westminster Village Health Care following a brief illness.
He was born in Muncie, the son of Daniel Boone and Lou Ann Osborne Cooley, moved to DeSoto as a child, graduated from DeSoto High School, and spent his early years in that area.
Mr. Cooley, a Democrat, served as mayor of Muncie for two terms from 1967 until 1975, served as Center Township Assessor for nine years, and served on the Muncie City Council in 1947 and 1955. Following his retirement from politics, he was employed with Reed, Queebe, Alison and Wilcox of Indianapolis as a consultant. He was also employed for 23 years with Warner Gear, now Borg Warner Automotive.
He was a member of First Baptist Church, Muncie Lodge #433, F&AM, Chapter #52, R.A.M., Council #69, C.M., Commandery #32, B.T., Murat Shriners, Murpah Shrine Club of Muncie, UAW, Local #287 where he served as financial secretary, and Muncie Moose Lodge #33. For many years, Paul was active in music as a singer with barber shop quartets, Music Theatre, weddings, funerals, operas, and with Muncie Central High School annual production of Handel's Messiah.
Surviving are his son, Dr. P. Phillip Cooley (wife-Carolyn); four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife of more than 73 years, Rebecca Faye Cooley, in 2005.
Services will be held in the First Baptist Church at 11:30 a.m. Friday, with Dr. William W. Noblitt officiating. Entombment will be private in Gardens of Memory Cemetery, north of Muncie. Friends may call at The Meeks Mortuary and Crematory, Washington Street Chapel, from 4-8 p.m. Thursday or at the church one half hour prior to service time on Friday.
