Joseph was the son of Frank J. and Anna (Keefer) Slonaker.

Joseph went overseas October 6, 1943 and served in England, France, Belgium and Holland with the 1147th Signal Company. He wears the ETO Ribbon with four battle stars. (The Gettysburg Times, Sep 14, 1945)

He was a former US Army Staff Sergeant who was discharged in October, 1945 after two and a half years with the Signal Corps here and in Europe.

Joseph was killed in a car crash east of Chambersburg, as well as three former classmates from the Gettysburg High School class of 1942: John Dale Kuhn, Russell Knight Bumbaugh, and Robert Lewis Spahr. All four had entered the service soon after ending their studies.
