Came to Texas in 1857. Served four years in the Confederate Army, wounded at least twice, fought in the battles of Shiloh, Perryville, Murfreesboro, Chickamauga and most of the siege from Chatanooga to Atlanta, and Hood's campaign into Tennessee at Franklin, and rose to the rank of Captain by the time of surrender. Fought in the 1869/1870 Indian Wars and served as a Captain in the Texas Rangers while working as a farmer and Methodist minister.
