Mangum, Ann B., 85, died peacefully at home in Sun City Center on December 20, 2012 following a lengthy and brave battle against gastric-esophageal cancer. She was born in New York City on September 14, 1927 to Patrick A. and Alice K. Bolger and lived in Bronxville, NY, before her marriage. She was preceded in death by her parents, youngest sister, Rosemary, and younger son, Bill Mangum. She is survived by her loving husband of 57 years, Wiley, son Jeff (Deborah Porterfield), grandsons, David and Daniel Mangum, sisters, Alice Rogers and Pat Behrens, and brothers, Bob and Bill Bolger and many other relatives and friends. Mrs. Mangum earned a B.A. in Sociology from Regis College in Weston, MA in 1949 and was a social worker in Westchester County, NY, Portsmouth, VA, and Austin, TX where she was the first Executive Director of the Adult Services Council, which serves older persons in Travis County. After moving to Los Angeles (Hermosa Beach) in 1961 with her husband and children, she was a stay-at-home mother for three years and, then, made a career change from social work to elementary education. She taught school in Los Angeles while doing graduate work in elementary education at UCLA and California State University, Long Beach. Following a family move to Florida in 1969, she taught in Tallahassee, Tampa and Temple Terrace and retired from the Hillsborough County School System in 1992. She and her husband moved to Sun City Center in 2002, where she has been involved in community affairs, including teaching the course, "News and Views" in the Community Church College. Following the death of her 36 year-old son, Bill, who had Type I diabetes, she became a dedicated volunteer with the Florida Camp for Children and Youth with Diabetes, serving as the "Story Lady" for 13 years in its Pee Wee Camp. Dealing with cancer is a multi-person familial and professional effort and the Mangum family is particularly grateful to Jason Stibich, MD of Apollo Beach for initially diagnosing Mrs. Mangum's cancer and providing excellent post-diagnostic care; to Richard Kim, MD and Alicia Chin, RN of the Moffitt Cancer Center for their diligent treatment of her; and to Theresa Spears, RN and Connie Behrens of the Green Team of LifePath Hospice for their devoted home care during the final stage of her illness. A private burial service was held at Sylvan Abbey Memorial Park in Clearwater, Fl. with Reverend James Langdoc of the United Church of Christ officiating and a memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Florida Camp for Children and Youth with Diabetes, University Station, P.O. Box 14136, Gainesville, FL 32604; LifePath Hospice, 12973 N. Telecom Parkway, Suite 100, Temple Terrace, FL 33637; Moffitt Cancer Center Foundation, P.O. Box 23827, Tampa, FL 33623-3827 or a charity of your choice.
