Herbert Joseph Basney: Newspaper Obituary and Death Notice
Pine Journal, The (Cloquet, MN) - Thursday, July 16, 2009
Deceased Name: Herbert Joseph Basney
Herbert Joseph Basney, 89, of New Brighton, Minn., died Friday, June 26, 2009, after a week-long struggle with pneumonia in North Memorial Hospital in Minneapolis, Minn. He was born on a farm in Onaway, Mich., on Jan. 14, 1920. He was the fourth child of 13 children born to Joseph and Christina Basney. His surviving siblings include Eileen Secoy, Joe, Orval, and Ilo Basney, all of Michigan, and Betty Dadswelle of North Carolina.

Herb joined the service in 1941, spending over four years fighting for our country during World War II. He flew as a radioman in a B-24 bomber in the Asian-Pacific theatre. As he said, "the war got him off the farm to see the world." We thank him for his service to our country. Herb now joins the ranks of the approximately 1,000 World War II veterans who die everyday in the United States. Attending college in Cedar City, Utah, Herb was an Army Air Force aviation cadet. His dream was to become a chemical engineer, but life took him in other places. In August 1946, he married Byrne Basney in Sioux Falls, S.D. Together they had three children, Jerry (Jackie) of Anoka, Minn., Colleen (Jon Norris) of Madison, Wis., and Keith (Margie) of Woodbury, Minn.; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Herb was preceded in death by his wife, Byrne, in 1974. Herb married Phyllis Myking in 1976. Phyllis and her two sons, Bruce (Donna) of Apple Valley, and Dean (Sue) if Fridley, Minn, are in Minneapolis, along with four grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Together, all of us mourn his death.

After his retirement from the Conoco Oil Refinery in 1981, Herb and Phyllis traveled extensively throughout the U.S., Australia, and New Zealand. He enjoyed volunteering with the Kiwanis, Shriners, and spent 40 years in the Masons. Our father was an avid walker, walking every day three to five miles in every kind of weather, without missing a day. In the last two years, he was no longer strong enough, and greatly missed his exercise. Herb felt that his greatest contribution to life was being the father of his three children, Jerry, Colleen and Keith. He also wrote that his basic philosophy was "to live and let live."

Memorial services was held Friday, July 10, with visitation at 1 p.m. and services at 2 p.m. at Kozlak's and Radulodich Funeral Home on Highway 65 in Blaine, Minn. As we honored him in his life and elderly years, we honor him in his death.
