Sarah Ann Smith was the second of the ten children born to George and Margaret Smith of Green County, Tennessee. At the age of 24 Sarah married Thomas Day, 7 years her junior, in Greenville, Tennessee. The young couple would have three children, Margaret, Sarah and William Day. In the spring of 1862, after laying in supplies for his family, Thomas mustered in the Union Army for the duration of the Civil War. Following his discharge in 1864, Thomas headed west to find work and Sarah elected not to join him, but to remain in Tennessee. In the summer of 1866 Thomas returned to Tennessee and Sarah still being of the same mind, Thomas filed a Divorce Petition with the Hawkins County Court. The case was heard and the divorce granted in June 1867. By 1870 Sarah and two of her children are living in Sullivan County, Missouri with her parents, George and Margaret. Following the death of her father in 1880, Sarah, along with her two children and her mother relocated to Colusa County, California. Sarah remained in California until her death at the age of 86.
