Lawrence Vaughn Jr., husband of Lula Cooper Vaughn, died Saturday, Dec. 29, 2012, at his residence. Born in Sumter County, he was a son of the late Lawrence Sr. and Pearl Lewis Vaughn.

Mr. Vaughn was a lifelong member of Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church where he served in many capacities, including trustee, senior choir, building and grounds, and the Brotherhood. He was a graduate of Lincoln High School in the Class of 1953. Later, he attended Voorhees College and Denmark Area Trade School where he studied carpentry. He was employed at Williams Furniture Company and later the Campbell Soup Company where he retired in 1992. He served his country in the U.S. Army. He was a member of St. Paul Masonic Lodge No. 8.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Ferguson Vaughn; one sister, Mary Elizabeth Richardson; and a brother, Bobby Vaughn.

Surviving are his beloved wife of 57 years, Lula Cooper Vaughn of the home; three sons, Lawrence Vaughn III of Everett, N.C., Rev. Ashley B. Vaughn of Sumter, Gary Alphonso Vaughn of Summerville; three daughters: Sharon AV Milligan of Charleston, Cassandra S. Vaughn of Pinewood, and Teresa R. Vaughn of San Diego; 11 grandchildren; three sisters, Mable V. Murray, Margie Ford and Pearl Mae Mills, all of Sumter, and two brothers, Willie Vaughn of Sumter and Rev. Herman Vaughn of Orangeburg; and a host of other relatives.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. on Thursday at Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. Dr. James B. Blassingame officiating. Interment will follow at Hillside Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the residence of 108 E. Newberry Avenue in Sumter. Mr. Vaughn will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. for viewing until the hour of service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church, P.O. Box 627, Sumter, SC 29151. Masonic rites will be held at 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Palmer Memorial Chapel, 304 South Main Street
