Harmen Bouma was born at the village Ureterp, municipality Opsterland, in the eastern part of the Dutch northern province Friesland. His parents are Pieter Riemers Bouma, 25 years, laborer, and Aaltje Kornelis de Boer.
On 15 May 1868 laborer Harmen Bouma married at Beetsterzwaag, the seat of mun. Opsterland, at the age of 24 years to the two years younger servant maid Femke Haisma, born in mun. Opsterland too, but at the village Lippenhuizen.
He died in January 1879 at his birthplace Ureterp at the age of 35 years of pneumonia, leaving his wife with six children ranging from 3 to 11 years old.
