Dies as boxcar Slips Off Jack – Mason City, IA (AP) – Olin Dewey Lovell, 67, of Des Moines was killed Wednesday when a Rock Island Railroad boxcar loaded with aluminum oxide slipped off a jack and pinned him beneath it. The car was on a siding and the wheels at one end had been removed for repair. Lovell and a co-worker, Lew McDonald, 21, of Des Moines, had placed two jacks under the boxcar and were putting a third in place when the car slipped. McDonald said he heard the boxcar start to fall and jumped aside. He said it “came down right behind my heel.”

Lovell, 67, of 1325 Fremont st., who was killed in an accident Wednesday at Mason City, will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Hamilton’s Funeral Home. Burial will be in Glendale Cemetery. Mr. Lovell, a carman for Rock Island Lines, was making repairs on a freight car when it slipped off the jacks, pinning him beneath it. He suffered a fractured neck. Born at Lucas, he lived in Des Moines 20 years. He had been with Rock Island 20 years and previously worked for the Burlington Railroad. He was a graduate of Lucas High School, attended Drake University and was a member of University Christian Church and the Eagles Lodge. Surviving are his wife, Mae; two sons, Leland of Denver, Ia., and Olin J. of Oshkosh, Wis.; a step-son, Lowell T. Fennell of Des Moines, and six daughters, Mrs. Marion Ferguson of West Des Moines, Mrs. Kathryn French of Maxwell, and Mrs. Eunice Corbin, Mrs. Marie Budrevich, Mrs. Zella Nye and Mrs. Anne Raymond, all of Des Moines. Also surviving are four step-daughters, Mrs. Lolita Evans of Minneapolis, Mrs. Betty Stonecipher of Denver, Colo., Mrs. Leora Thomas of Des Moines and Mrs. Cecile Woodside of Bridgewater; five brothers, Carl W. and George W. of Des Moines, Kenneth and Dean of San Lorenzo, Calif., and Raymond E. of Glendo, Wyo.; two sisters, Mrs. Lillie Johnson of Woodburn and Mrs. Ruby Pumphrey of Cedar Rapids, and 21 grandchildren.
