Professional Hockey Player/Builder. A native of Fort William, Ontario, Poile played for teams in the WHL, NHL, MMHL, and the USHL hockey leagues. At 6'00", and 185 lbs, Poile played for the Toronto Maple Leafs from 1942 to 1948, Chicago Blackhawks from 1947 to 1949, Detroit Red Wings from 1948 to 1949, New York Rangers from 1949 to 1950, Boston Bruins from 1949 to 1950, Tulsa Oilers from 1950 to 1951, Glace-Bay Miners from 1951 to 1952, and the Edmonton Flyers from 1952 to 1955. Poile also was Head Coach of the Edmonton Flyers from 1952 to 1962, and the San Francisco Seals from 1962 to 1966. Poile who served in World War II also became a well-known hockey executive and was the recipient of several awards and honours. In his later career Poile served as General Manager for the Philadelphia Flyers in 1967, General Manager for the Vancouver Canucks from 1970 to 1973, Executive Vice-President of the Vancouver Canucks in 1976, Commissioner of the Central Hockey League (CHL) from 1976 to 1984, and then Head of the International Hockey League (IHL) until he retired in 1989. Poile was awarded the Lester Patrick Trophy for his efforts in 1989, and was also inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame as a Builder in 1990. Poile's son is David Poile, General Manager of the Nashville Predators. Poile passed away in Vancouver, British Columbia, on January 4, 2005, at the age of 80, after a long battle with Parkinsons Disease and strokes.
