K 1st Mass., heavy artillery from Lawrence, Mass, and came to Bennington soon after the close of the war. He gave up his work about two years ago on account of failing health and for the past nine months had been confined to his home on Beech street. He was twice married, his first wife being Miss Esther Downs of this village who died in 1887. His second wife was Mrs. Matilda Denio, also of Bennington, who survives him. By his first marriage he had two sons and three daughters, Eugen F., and Robert M. L. Holt of Pittsfield, Mrs. Agnes Sexton and Mrs. Helen Winslow of Bennington, who also survive. A daughter, Clara, died in 1893, and a son , Sumner by his second marriage, died less than a year ago. He leaves one sister, Mrs. Frank D. Valpey of Lawrence, Mass., a step-son, Lafayette Denio of Bennington and step-daughter, Mrs. Lloyd S. Wallace of Akron, Ohio.
He was always active in Grand Army work, and his loss will be felt by the old soldiers. The funeral was held from the soldiers' home Sunday afternoon February 6 at 3 o'clock, Rev. Earl C. Davis of the Unitarian church Pittsfield, officiating. Burial was in the village cemetery.
