Andrew C.Butler,76, of Pine Bluff, passed away Saturday, December 15, at JRMC. He was born in Star City, Ar to Maceo Butler and Reba M. Butler-Heard. He was a long time member of Damascus Missionary Baptist Church, where he served as a Trustee.
A C graduated from Merrill High School in 1954, AM&N(now UAPB) in 1958 with a BS degree in PreMed, and Tuskegee Institute in 1970 with a Master's degree in Supervision and Administration.He played varsity football while at AM&N, served in the military upon graduation, and started his teaching/coaching career in 1961 at Cotton Plant, Ar. In 1965 he joined the Pine Bluff School district as a staff member at Southeast Junior and Senior High School. His tenure at Pine Bluff High School began in 1970 as a science teacher and assistant coach with the football and track teams. He became the head track coach in 1973, where he lead his teams to 10 state championships between 1974 and 1990. From 1989-91, he was activities coordinator at the UAPB Youth Opportunities Unlimited Summer Program. He retired from PBHS in 1993 due to health problems.
A C was an active member of several organizations, including; the National Science Teachers Association, Pine Bluff Education Association, Arkansas Education Association, National Education Association, Arkansas High School Coaches Association, Arkansas Track Coaches Association, Arkansas Health, Physical Education and Recreation Association, Arkansas Teacher Retirement System Board of Trustees, Northside Kivanis Club, and held lifetime memberships in the AM&N/UAPB Alumni Association and Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity.
The AHSCA honored Mr. Butler as the Outstanding Track Coach of the Year in 1982 and 1983. In 1999 he was inducted into the Arkansas Track and Field Hall of Fame and the Arkansas High School Coaches Hall of Fame.
A C was preceded in death by his mother Reba M. Butler-Heard, step-father William Heard, father Maceo Butler, and son Darryl Williams. Survivors include his wonderful wife of 48 years, Luvertha;daughters Erika Butler-White, Cheryl Butler-Tinkham(Gregg) and Cherie Butler; grandson Devin, William, and Weston along with other loving family members and many,many friends.
