Rowena Crume Preuit was born in Elida on November 16, 1918, to the home of Helen and Price Crume, and died December 29, 2012, in Portales. Rowena graduated from Elida High School in 1935, and went on to study at Eastern New Mexico Junior College where she finished her studies in 1943. She taught school for several years in various schools, and was an instructor at Benson's School of Commerce in Clovis.
Following the end of World War II, she was married to her high school classmate, Top Preuit, in Roswell on March 2, 1946. They ranched near Milnesand, NM, until his death in 1992. She resided at their family ranch and remained active in its operation until approximately three years ago when she moved to the Bee Hive Home in Portales.
Rowena was a charter member of the Milnesand Homemakers Club, and a devoted member of the Milnesand Baptist Church. She was the church pianist and treasurer for many years. She loved the Christian way of life and serving her Lord and Savior. She enjoyed reunions and revivals, and was always ready to help in all the community functions. In 2004, she was chosen as the Roosevelt County Pioneer Woman of the Year.
She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Larry and Sandra Preuit of Milnesand, NM, and Terry and LaVonda Preuit of Las Cruces, NM; a grandson, Lynn Preuit and a great-grandson, Price Preuit both of Portales; a brother and sister-in-law, Dr. Elwyn and Pat Crume of Clovis, NM; a sister, Verdine Howard of Farmington, NM; as well as several nieces and nephews and numerous cousins, including Jim Crume Meadows of Albuquerque, NM.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Phillip and Wayne Crume, and by her beloved husband, Top Preuit who died December 16, 1992.
