Richard "Dick" Newsome, 70, of Anderson, a retired Shasta County Sheriff Sergeant, died Friday, December 21, 2012 in his home.

He was born December 25, 1941 in Dearborn, Michigan. Dick moved to Shasta County in the 1960's to help his parents run their resort, Sugarloaf Beach and Marina; which he enjoyed very much. In 1967 Dick was hired on with the Shasta County Sheriff's department to patrol the lake. From there Dick went on to work in the jail, became a bailiff for Judge Eaton, and started patrol in Shasta Lake City. In a few short years he was promoted to Sergeant of the Waterways and head of Search and Rescue. In 1981 Dick found his calling and passion as a criminal investigator in charge of the homicide department where he convicted many criminals and brought justice to Shasta County. During his retirement he loved flying model airplanes at Anderson River Park with his long-time friend Mike Hubert and grandson Chad Foster.

Dick is survived by his devoted wife, Ruth, who brought great joy to his life and was a loving, compassionate caregiver whose sole concern was his comfort. He is also survived by his daughter Juli and son-in-law Steve Foster of Anderson, son Richard and daughter-in-law Amy Newsome of Moscow, Idaho; grandchildren Chad and Ryan Foster, Haley and Jamie Newsome, and great-granddaughter Alyssa Foster.
