'The Madisonian,' Virginia City, MT
22 March 1900, page 1:
Mr. S. E. Bickford died at 5 o'clock this morning, after a lingering illness of over three years, during which he was a most patient sufferer. During his last serious illness he suffered great pain, but was conscious at the end and calling his wife bade her good-by.
Deceased was born in Saco, Maine about 68 years ago and has a sister living at or near the old home. He crossed the plains with the late E. F. Johnson from Colorado to Bannack and they were both in the first stampede to Alder gulch in 1863. He has resided in this city continuously ever since. He has been engaged in several successful enterprises and also owned a large band of cattle, but of late years he had controverted his money and property largely into gilt-edge securities. He leaves his family in very comfortable circumstances besides owning two-thirds of the stock of the Virginia City Water Co., which yields a good income. In 1884 he was married to Mrs. Sallie Brown and four children were born to bless their union, the oldest being a son 15 years of age and three daughters who, with the mother, survive him. He was a good husband and a kind and indulgent father. Mr. Bickford was a good citizen, public spirited and taking an active interest in the welfare of the city. His loss will be shared by all.
The funeral will be held tomorrow (Friday) at 2 p.m. from the residence and the remains will be interred in Hillside cemetery. The family have the sympathy of the entire community in their loss.
