William T. Babcock Jr. passed away at his home in Exeter, NH, on February 6, 2007. He was 85 years of age. Mr. Babcock was born in Cambridge, MA, raised in Melrose and graduated from Melrose High School, Class of 1940. After graduating from school Mr. Babcock joined the US Navy and served in the Navy during WWII. He joined the Melrose Police Department on Nov. 17, 1947 and was called back to duty in June of 1951 to serve in the Navy during the Korean War. Mr. Babcock was a Melrose Police Officer for 30 years, retiring as a SGT on Sept. 30, 1980. He lived most of his life in Melrose and moved to Exeter, NH in 1984 after retiring. William was an avid fisherman & golfer and was best known for his sense of humor. He was a former member of the VFW Harold O'Young Post # 2394 in Melrose, the Melrose Elks and Knights of Columbus. He was the husband of the late Ruth A. (Concannon) Babcock. Father of Carol A. Linehan & her husband Dan of Danville, NH, William T. Babcock III of Melrose, Kevin Babcock & his wife Kathleen of Auburn, NH and Michael R. Babcock of Exeter, NH. Brother of James Babcock & his wife Marie of NH and the late Julia Olson, Wally Babcock & Ellen Flannagan. Grandfather of William T. IV, Anthony, Timothy, Erin, Matthew, Keri, Jonathan & Ruthie. Great grandfather of Chelsea & the late Connor. Also survived by several nieces & nephews. Funeral from the Gately Funeral Home, 79 W. Foster St. Melrose, on Saturday, Feb. 10th, at 9AM. Funeral Mass in St. Mary's Church, Herbert St. Melrose, at 10AM. Relatives & friends invited. Visiting hours Friday 4-8PM. Interment in Wyoming Cemetery in Melrose.
