CLOVIS, N.M. - E.L. Nelson, 73, died Monday, May 11, 1998. Services will be at 9 a.m. today in Trinity Methodist Church with the Rev. Ron Brewer officiating. Burial will be in Elida Cemetery by Wheeler Mortuary of Portales. Mr. Nelson was born in Portales. He lived in and around Portales during his childhood and was educated in the Portales schools. He was drafted into the Army during World War II, serving in Italy, France and Germany. He was wounded on three different occasions and received several medals, including three Purple Hearts, the Bronze Star and the Bronze Arrow. After the war, Mr. Nelson returned to Elida, where he managed Wall and Sons Grocery. He then worked for 15 1/2 years as manager of the commissary at Cannon Air Force Base. He was the butcher at Parkway Grocery in Portales for 16 years. He had been retired since 1986. He was a member of Woodmen of the World and a former member of Disabled American Veterans. He was a longtime member of First United Methodist Church in Portales before moving to Clovis, where he was a member of Trinity Methodist Church. Mr. Nelson married Nancy Willis in 1949 at Hugo, Okla. They had lived in Clovis since 1994. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Jeffrey D. Nelson of Grand Prairie, Texas, and Stacey Nelson of Las Vegas; a daughter, Becky Burkett of Lovington; a sister, Leviatha "Vi" Jones of McDonald; and three grandchildren.
